Springfield, Mass. – April 6, 2025 – The Springfield College men's tennis team shutout Emerson College, 7-0, to earn its third New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win of the season on Sunday afternoon on the Appleton Tennis Courts.
Springfield improved to 11-2 overall and to 3-1 in NEWMAC play as the Pride now have the most wins in a season since 2017 and have only reached the 11 win mark for the tenth time in program history. With three regular season matches to play, the program record for wins sits at 13 set by the 1992 and 1989 squads.
Springfield won two of the three doubles matches this afternoon against the Lions. Both
Micah Matsudaira (Cornwall Bridge, Conn.) and
Marc Villanueva Abad (Barcelona, Mexico) at No. 2 and
Liam Huppke (Markham, Canada) and
Angelo Guzman (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) at No. 3 were victorious by 6-2 finals.
Tatsuya Kimoto (Yamaguchi, Japan) and
Waseem Sablon (Stoughton, Mass.) were edged by Filippo Nocchi and Connor Leung, 7-5, at No. 1.
Springfield won all six singles points and five of the matches in straight sets. Kimoto won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1, Guzman won 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 and Villanueva Abad won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Huppke went on to win 6-2, 6-2 at No. 4,
Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) won 6-2, 6-0 at No. 5 and
Zach Taub (New Windsor, N.Y.)won 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 at No. 6.
Springfield will host Clark University on Saturday at 1:30 pm.
