Springfield, Mass. – April 15, 2026 – The Springfield College men's tennis team dropped a 6-1 NEWMAC decision to No. 34 MIT on Wednesday afternoon on the Appleton Tennis Courts.
Springfield, which was handed its first conference loss of the season today, moved to 10-6 overall and to 5-1 in NEWMAC play with the regular season finale set for Saturday at No. 15 Babson at 10:30 am.
Springfield and MIT played three tight doubles contests with the Engineers winning 6-2 and 6-4 at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively, to claim the point. The Pride, however, saw
Liam Huppke (Markham, Canada) and
Angelo Guzman (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) earned a 6-4 decision at No. 3.
MIT won five of the six singles points with the lone victor coming as
Marc Villanueva Abad (Barcelona, Mexico). The senior fell in set one 7-6, but bounced back in set two, 6-2, before Henry Feldman retired with Villanueva Abad up 4-1 in the tiebreaker securing the point for the hosts.
The Engineers won in straight sets at No. 1 and No. 2.
Akito Shimamura (Hirono, Japan) won his first set at No. 3, but ultimately was defeated by Sanghyuk Im, 6-1, 3-6, 4-6. Huppke also played a tight match at No. 5 with Jeremy Yu and also claimed the first set, 6-2, but fell by scores of 6-2, 1-6, 2-6.
At No. 6,
Ethan Gomulka (San Bernardino, Calif.) faced Nicholas Liu and played a three set contest, but fell 7-5, 4-6, 2-10.
