Wellesley, Mass. – April 9, 2025 – The Springfield College softball team split its New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) doubleheader at Wellesley College this afternoon as the Pride won game one, 5-3, before falling in the nightcap 4-1.
Springfield moved its record to 12-8 overall and to 3-3 in NEWMAC play, while Wellesley pushed its record to 9-8-1, 4-2.
Game One: Springfield 5, Wellesley 3
Springfield's offense in the opener was guided by
Lucy Puskas (Roxbury, Conn.), who went 2-for-4 at the plate with three RBI including a home run and what proved to be the game winning double in the top of the seventh.
Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) chipped in with a 1-for-3 effort and two RBI as well, while
Katie Manzone (Wareham, Mass.) and
Kate Katsetos (Brewster, N.Y.) both added two hits for Springfield, which totaled eight knocks on the day.
After Wellesley scored first in the bottom of the second, Springfield answered with a bases loaded walk to knot the score at one.
Marissa Seyfert (Farmingdale, N.Y.) reached on an error,
Brynlee Eckles (Ellington, Conn.) singled through the left side and
Carissa Pecchia (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) walked before Gendron earned the RBI on with the free pass with the bases loaded.
Puskas then gave Springfield a 2-1 edge as she belted her third round-tripper over the fence in left center. A sacrifice fly and an RBI single down the left field line, however, gave Wellesley a 3-2 lead at the end of the fifth. With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Brynne Mellady roped a double to left center and Jill Colgan was sent home, but a great relay from Seyfert to Manzone to Gendron kept the score at 3-2 as Colgan was cut down at the plate.
Springfield was down to its final out in the top of the seventh. With Eckles on second, Gendron hit a single up the middle and Eckles was sent home. Looking like the game would be over with the tag at the plate, Eckles was called safe due to obstruction tying the score at three. Then after a single to left center by Manzone, Puskas drilled a two-run double plating Gendron and Manzone to make it 5-3.
Lily McCauliffe (Greenwich, Conn.) returned to the circle for the bottom of the seventh and despite walking the leadoff hitter, retired the side in order to secure the game one win for the Pride. Over the final 2.1 innings, McCauliffe allowed just one hit and one walk and struck out two to improve to 2-0 in the circle with her second conference victory in as many games.
Game Two: Wellesley 4, Springfield 1
Manzone went 2-for-3 with Springfield's lone RBI in the nightcap, while six different student-athletes for the Pride registered a hit in game two.
After
Amelia DeRosa (Miller Place, N.Y.) doubled to left to begin the game, a single by
Emilia Santiago (West Hartford, Conn.) moved her to third and a single through the right side by Manzone gave Springfield a 1-0 lead. Wellesley, however, answered as Sarah Wicker lined a two-run single to center pushing the hosts back in front 2-1 through one full frame.
Wellesley added one run in the fourth and one more in the sixth and that's all the hosts would need to secure the split as Wicker pitched a complete game for Wellesley scattered seven hits and striking out five in the 4-1 final.
Springfield is scheduled to host WPI in a NEWMAC twinbill on Friday beginning at 3:00 pm from Potter Field.
