Hoboken, NJ – August 31, 2025 – Three goals in a span of ten minutes in the second half sent Stevens Institute of Technology over the Springfield College women's soccer team, 3-2, in the 2025 season opener for the Pride on Sunday afternoon at the DeBaun Athletic Complex.
Stevens picked up its first win of the season improving to 1-0-1, while Springfield starts its season at 0-1-0.
Kaitlyn Suller (Oviedo, Fla.) and
Katie McFerran (Selkirk, N.Y.) registered goals for the Pride this afternoon, while
Mallory Forgatch (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) notched a career-best 13 saves between the pipes and made ten of her 13 saves in the first half.
Suller put Springfield ahead 12 minutes into the game after taking the ball nearly 75 yards down the field and plowed through the Stevens back line before burying the ball past the Stevens keeper for the 1-0 lead. The score remained the same at halftime despite the host Ducks outshooting the Pride 16-7 over the initial 45 minutes of play.
Stevens took advantage of two Springfield turnovers in their offensive zone and turned them into a pair of goals – both of which came in a span of 41 seconds. An unassisted strike by Sophia Murphy knotted the game at one before Alina Friz gave the hosts a 2-1 edge. About eight minutes later, Lauren Alley put the game out of reach with Stevens' third goal of the half.
With under ten minutes left in regulation, McFerran buried her first collegiate goal after finishing a pass from
Peyton Knott (Leicester, Mass.) to make it 3-2, but that was all the offense was able to muster against a strong Stevens side.
Stevens outshot Springfield 29-9, including 16-6 on goal and held a 9-2 differential in corner kicks.
Springfield will return to Western Massachusetts for a non-conference game at Western New England on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
