Springfield, Mass. – September 3, 2025 – The Springfield College women's soccer team fell to Western New England, 2-0, in a non-conference matchup at Suprenant Field on Wednesday afternoon.
With the result, Springfield moves to 0-2-0 on the season, while the Golden Bears improve to 1-1.
The first half was evenly contested, with both teams generating chances but unable to break through. Springfield controlled possession for stretches and ultimately outshot Western New England 8-5 in the opening 45 minutes. Junior goalkeeper
Mallory Forgatch (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) anchored the Pride defense, coming up with three first-half stops to keep the game scoreless heading into the break.
Springfield had multiple looks at goal early, including attempts by
Katie McFerran (Selkirk, N.Y.) and
Kaitlyn Suller (Oviedo, Fla.), but Western New England's keeper Ainsley Napolitano turned away both opportunities. The Pride also earned a pair of early corner kicks but could not convert.
Western New England increased its offensive pressure and finally broke through in the 58th minute when Tess Chevalier scored off a well-placed strike to the top corner, giving the Golden Bears a 1-0 lead. Ten minutes later, Meghan Hartnett doubled the advantage in the 69th minute, finishing a loose ball in the box to make it 2-0.
Springfield pushed for a response, generating six second-half shots and four corners, but Napolitano and the Western New England backline held strong to preserve the shutout.
Western New England held a 16-14 edge in shots, but Springfield took a 7-5 differential in corners. Forgatch ended the day with eight saves between the pipes for the Pride.
The Pride return to action on Saturday, September 6, when they host Hartford in a rematch of last season's ECAC Championship game at 1:00 pm on Brock-Affleck Field.
