Hartford, Conn. - September 13, 2025 - The Springfield College women's volleyball team picked up wins over Trinity College (Conn.) and UMass Boston in a non-conference Saturday tri-match in Oosting Gymnasium.
Springfield, which improved to 6-2 this fall, defeated the host Bantams in five sets by scores of 25-23, 14-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13 and the Beacons in straight sets by scores of 25-20, 25-18, 25-19.
Springfield 3, Trinity 2
Ahunna James (Plainville, Mass.) powered Springfield's offense against the Bantams with 16 kills as she hit a team-best .310 in addition to 15 digs, two assists and four blocks.
Jodi Saelua (Mililani, Hawaii) chipped in with nine kills and seven blocks, while
Olivia Nealy (Athens, Ga.) led the way for the Pride with 17 digs,
Tori Colosimo (Fairport, N.Y.) registered 35 assists and 14 digs and
Alexa Bonato (Orange, Conn.) notched six kills, 13 digs and five blocks. Trinity was led by Ellie Gordon who posted 26 kills and hit .408 in the match for the hosts.
Tied at 15 in the first, Springfield used a kill from Saelua to regain the lead for good. The brief 4-0 spurt also included an ace from James, a kill from Bonato and a block from Bonato and Saelua for a 19-15 edge. Trinity attempted to climb back into the set with a late 6-2 run to pull within two but a service error gave Springfield the opening stanza, 25-23.
In the second, Trinity raced out to an 8-1 lead and never looked back as the Bantams evened the match at one with a 25-14 win in the set. Trinity hit a match best .407 (14-3-27) in the second alone.
Springfield was able to cut its deficit in the third to just two points on multiple occasions, but Trinity used a 6-3 run down the stretch capped on a swing by Gordon to take the third, 25-20, and be within one set of defeating the Pride.
Both teams hit negative in the fourth, but five kills from James was the difference for Springfield as two swings with set point sent the match into a fifth. The final set was knotted at seven before a kill from Saelua and an ace from
Karenna Allain (Woodbridge, Conn.) gave the Pride a two point cushion at 9-7. Trinity was able to tie the score once again at 12, but James powered for a swing off a feed from Colosimo for a 13-12 edge before Bonato and James terminated the set, 15-13, and the match 3-2 for the Pride.
This was Springfield's first tilt with Trinity since 2023, but the Pride now own a 10-0 advantage in the series dating back to 1999. Springfield and Trinity have only played twice to five sets in the series - once today and once back in 2008 in Blake Arena.
Springfield 3, UMass Boston 0
James once again led the Pride with six kills and 14 digs against the Beacons.
Emily Keaveney (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) hit .444 (5-1-9) and
Aubrey Hughes (Liberty Hill, Texas) hit .500 (4-0-8), while Colosimo dished out 22 assists in addition to 12 digs and at the net Saelua totaled seven blocks for Springfield.
Springfield trailed 16-13 in the first before an error by UMass Boston sparked a 7-0 run for the Pride that featured kills from Saelua and Bonato and was capped on an ace by James. Both teams traded points down the stretch but Springfield's final five points came courtesy of five UMass Boston errors to take it 25-20.
The Pride jumped out to an 11-5 lead in the second as the initial run was highlighted by Saelua stuffing Addie Blomgren at the net. UMass Boston eventually tied the score at 18, but after a Springfield substitution that saw Keaveney enter the match, the Pride tallied the final seven points which were highlighted by a pair of solo blocks from Saelua and kills from both Keaveney and James.
UMass Boston held an early 7-3 lead in the third, but an 8-1 spurt for Springfield put the Pride ahead 11-8 as
Avery Chandler (Stoneville, N.C.) and Saelua ended the offense spark for Springfield. With Allain at the service line, the Pride eventually led 17-9 following an ace from the sophomore before a pair of kills by Keaveney, an ace by James and one final error by the Beacons secured the sweep for the Pride.
Springfield will return to action on Tuesday with a non-conference match at Endicott College beginning at 6:00 pm.
