Springfield, Mass. – September 3, 2025 – The Springfield College field hockey team dropped a hard-fought 2-0 decision to No. 16 nationally-ranked Amherst College on Wednesday night at Stagg Field.
With the result, Springfield moves to 1-1 on the year, while the Mammoths improve to 1-0 to open their season.
Amherst controlled possession early and capitalized in the ninth minute, as Molly Donegan scored off a rebound following a penalty corner to give the Mammoths a 1-0 lead. Despite several more corners and shots for Amherst, the Pride's defense - anchored by goalkeeper
Sam Orcutt (Forestdale, Mass.) kept the margin at one heading into halftime.
Springfield generated its best looks in the third quarter, earning back-to-back penalty corners in the 32nd minute, but Amherst's defense held firm. Moments later, Donegan struck again for Amherst in the 36th minute, finishing a feed from Katie Kantrovitz to make it 2-0.
In the fourth quarter, Springfield continued to press forward, creating two more corners in the 56th minute and a dangerous shot from
Sarah Goldstein (Cheshire, Conn.), but Amherst goalkeeper Grace Puchalski preserved the shutout for the Mammoths.
Amherst held a 17-6 margin in shots and a 16-4 differential in penalty corners. Orcutt totaled a career-best 12 saves, including the first one of her collegiate career for the Pride, this evening.
