Newport, R.I. - January 21, 2026 - The Springfield College women's basketball team is bringing home its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) win of the season after defeating Salve Regina in overtime on Wednesday night, 58-55.
The Pride improve to 10-6 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC while the Seahawks are 6-10 and 0-2.
Natalie Lucas (Madison, Conn.) led the Pride with 22 points and five rebounds as she was in double figures in the first quarter. Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) filled the box score as she scored 11 points, grabbed six rebounds, had four steals, and dished out two assists. Carrie Hess (Shrewsbury, Mass.) had 13 points, six rebounds, and two steals.Â
Salve Regina led for over half of the first quarter until 13 first-quarter points from Lucas powered the Pride to take the lead. Madison Lopez (Bronx, N.Y.) hit a buzzer beater to make it 17-13 going into the second quarter. Â
The Seahawks evened the score at 17 quickly, but Hess and Leary then combined for nine points to lead by ten at 5:06. The duo had all but three of Springfield's 18 second-quarter points to lead the Pride to 35-23 going into the halftime break.Â
Springfield couldn't get it going in the third quarter as Salve Regina went on a 12-3 run to cut the lead to three as the Pride were scoreless for over four minutes. Springfield then took a 43-35 lead going into the fourth quarter after a jumper from Ruth Boles (South Portland, Maine) and a trey from Stefany Padula (Franklin, Mass.).Â
The Pride and the Seahawks exchanged a few baskets to start the fourth quarter, but Salve Regina pulled ahead and took the lead, 49-51, after a basket from Sofia Neary who finished with 20 for Salve Regina. After one made free throw from the Seahawks, Hess responded with a layup to tie it up at 52. Neither team could get anything else going to force overtime.
Both teams were scoreless for a minute and a half into overtime until Salve Regina made a foul shot before Lucas had back-to-back baskets to lead 56-53. Emma Cochrane then had the opportunity to complete a three-point play to tie the game after being fouled but missed the free throw and Springfield was able to get the win, 58-55.
Springfield shot 33.8-percent (24-for-71) from the floor while Salve Regina was 21-for-59 (35.6-percent). The Seahawks had 25 turnovers, but outrebounded the Pride 49-40 as Salve Regina had 12 second chance points in the second half to keep them in the game.
