No. 6/6 Smith Takes Down Women's Basketball

Northampton, Mass. - January 31, 2026 - The Springfield College women's basketball team was downed by New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent No. 6/6 Smith on Saturday afternoon, 47-66.

Smith improved to 18-1 and remained unbeaten in the conference at 5-0 while Springfield dropped to 11-8, 3-2. 

Carrie Hess (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led the Pride with 12 points, four assists, a steal and a block while Claire Finney (Haverhill, Mass.) had 10 points, a steal and a block. Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.), Madison Lopez (Bronx, N.Y.) and Natalie Lucas (Madison, Conn.) each grabbed five rebounds.

It was back and forth between Springfield and Smith with four lead changes coming in just the first quarter. Finney powered the offense for the Pride scoring six points while Selam Maher had nine for the Bears as both teams were tied up at 15 going into the next quarter. 

Smith outscored the Pride by six as Springfield had eight turnovers in the second quarter, but Stefany Padula (Franklin, Mass.) kept the Pride in the game scoring five points, grabbing two rebounds, while also registering a block and a steal. The Bears led 35-29 going into the halftime break. 

Hess put two on the board early in the third quarter before Smith went on a 14-0 run to lead 38-31 which left Springfield scoreless for over seven minutes. Ruth Boles (South Portland, Maine) hit a jumper and Izzy Pazzaglia (Salem, Conn.) knocked down a trey with less than a minute left in the quarter as Smith took a 51-36 lead. 

Hess and Lopez combined for eight points in the fourth to try to spark a comeback for the Pride as the Bears only outscored Springfield by four. Springfield was scoreless for the final three minutes of the game and could not get back in it after a dominate third quarter performance from Smith as the Bears took the win, 66-47. 

Smith shot 46.2-percent from the floor and were 9-for-16 from three while Springfield shot 37.8-percent from the floor and was 7-for-20 from beyond the arc. The Bears held a 28-25 edge on the glass and scored 22 points off of 20 Springfield turnovers. 

The Pride host Coast Guard on Wednesday at 5:00 pm in Blake Arena.
