Springfield, Mass. – February 4, 2026 – The Springfield College women's basketball team outscored Coast Guard 20-6 in the first quarter and went on to defeat the Bears, 62-47, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action from Blake Arena on Wednesday night.
Springfield improved to 12-8 overall and to 3-3 in NEWMAC play, while Coast Guard dropped to 10-10, 2-4.
Carrie Hess (Shrewsbury, Mass.) led Springfield with 15 points as one of three Pride student-athletes in double figures this evening. Hess shot 7-for-12 form the floor, while
Natalie Lucas (Madison, Conn.) added 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocks.
Amanda Leary (Westbury, N.Y.) registered a double-double – here third of the season with 11 points and 13 rebounds to go along with a trio of assists. Dorothy Stotts guided Coast Guard with 19 of its 47 points.
Springfield raced out to a 12-2 advantage over the first 4:52 of the game as all five Pride starters tallied a bucket over the run.
Madison Lopez (Bronx, N.Y.) knocked down a corner three off a feed from Leary forcing Coast Guard to burn a timeout. In the same stretch, the visiting Bears hit just one of its first ten shots from the floor. Springfield took an eventual 20-6 lead after ten minutes of play after Lucas hit a three from the top of the arc.
Springfield went on to score the first 11 points of the second quarter to push ahead by a 31-6 margin. Hess tallied six of those 11 points and Lopez hit a three over the stretch that lasted nearly four minutes. Coast Guard answered and outscored Springfield 12-3 over the final 5:16 of the half as the score stood at 34-18 at the break.
Similar to the second, Springfield began the third with a 10-4 spurt that saw
Claire Finney (Haverhill, Mass.)knock down a jumper to start the scoring before Hess tallied back-to-back shots from the floor pushing the Pride back ahead by 22 at 44-22. The Bears once again responded with an 11-5 run to close the third, but the Pride continued to lead 48-31 after three.
Coast Guard was able to pull as close as ten points midway through the fourth, but a pair of free throws from Leary and a three point and-one play from Lucas put the game out of reach as Springfield won by a 62-47 final.
Springfield shot 41.3-percent from the floor and knocked down five shots from behind the arc. Coast Guard held a 46-42 edge on the glass and pulled down 14 offensive boards. The Pride scored 28 points in the paint and turned ten Bears turnovers into 11 points tonight.
Springfield will host Wheaton College on Saturday at 3:00 pm in Blake Arena.
