Springfield, Mass. — October 23, 2026 — For Mason Lupp (Middletown, Pa.), gymnastics has always been about more than what happens inside the gym.
A member of the Springfield College men's gymnastics team, Lupp has found ways to use his passion for the sport to create opportunities for others and promote men's gymnastics throughout Pennsylvania.
While attending Commonwealth Charter Academy online for most of high school, Lupp had the flexibility to dedicate time to working with PA Men's Gymnastics alongside Jeffrey Zack, the organization's State Chairman. As the PA Men's Gymnastics Promotional Editor and Media Producer, Lupp has worked with gymnasts, coaches, judges, and other leaders throughout the gymnastics community to promote the sport and connect younger gymnasts with new opportunities.
"I would create hype videos using clips of gymnasts from across Pennsylvania, promote upcoming competitions and the annual state camp at International Gymnastics Camp, and reach out to athletes and coaches to help provide younger gymnasts with opportunities to learn from higher-level coaches," Lupp said.
His work was shared across Instagram, Facebook and YouTube, giving Lupp the opportunity to combine his creativity with his passion for gymnastics.
One project that stands out to Lupp was helping design the PA Men's Gymnastics state logo for the 2024 season. The design featured Lupp performing a Kovacs on high bar, highlighting the athletic and acrobatic nature of the sport.
While his work behind the scenes allowed him to promote gymnastics, his experiences as a gymnast have also shown him just how connected the gymnastics community can be.
In 2023, Lupp competed in the Akeshovshallen Cup in Åkeshov, Sweden, against teams from Sweden, Norway, Iceland and other countries throughout the region. Years later, after arriving at Springfield, Lupp became teammates with a gymnast from the Swedish club that hosted that same competition.
Those connections are part of what makes the gymnastics community so meaningful to Lupp as he knows that the relationships built through the sport can continue to open doors and connect you with people at every level. He's been able to meet Stephen Nedoroscik, a former collegiate gymnast, Olympian and World Championship medalist along with Kevin Tan, a former collegiate gymnast and World Champion on still rings who was both a college teammate and roommate of Zack Roeder, Lupp's club coach.
His experiences have also shaped the way he views his own role within the sport.
"Men's gymnastics is a very niche sport, and many communities simply do not have much exposure to it," Lupp said. "I want to continue using my experiences and connections to help people understand the sport and create more opportunities for younger athletes."
That mindset has continued during his time at Springfield. Lupp credits the brotherhood within the men's gymnastics team and the close-knit nature of the gymnastics community for reinforcing his desire to positively impact those around him.
Looking toward the future, Lupp hopes to combine his passion for gymnastics with his applied exercise science degree and concentration in strength and conditioning. His goal is to help athletes as individuals while continuing to be a positive influence on their lives both inside and outside of sports.
For Lupp, that impact does not necessarily require a traditional internship or job title. Sometimes, it starts with simply getting involved.
"My biggest advice would be to pursue opportunities that connect to something you genuinely care about, even if they are not traditional internships or jobs," Lupp said. "I would also encourage students to create opportunities for themselves instead of waiting for the perfect position to come along."
Through his work promoting men's gymnastics, his experiences competing around the world and the relationships he has built along the way, Lupp has learned that the impact of an athlete can extend far beyond their own performance.
At Springfield, he continues to use that lesson to help grow the sport he loves and create opportunities for the next generation of gymnasts.
