Newton, Mass. - February 18, 2025 - The top-ranked Springfield College men's volleyball team took down No. 14 Lasell University in three straight sets in a Wednesday night matchup by scores of 25-18, 25-22, 25-15.
Springfield, now 9-1 on the season, earned its seventh straight victory over a ranked team and completed the season sweep of the Lasers, while Lasell dropped to 10-4 overall.
Springfield's offense was guided by
Carter Durivage (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and
Sam Levinson (LaGrange, Ill.) who combined for 15 of the Pride's 37 kills in the sweep.
Brennan Cutter (Trumbull, Conn.) hit .444 with six kills, while
Dylan Mulvaney (Reston, Va.),
Joey Preische (Penfield, N.Y.) and
Nathan Goh (Germantown, Md.) all added four kills on the night.
AJ Seveland (Jenkintown, Pa.) and
Ricardo Ortiz (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) both notched six digs, while Mulvaney totaled 29 assists for the Pride's offensive unit.
The beginning of the opening set saw a back-and-forth between the Lasers and the Pride as Springfield jumped out to an early lead, but Lasell then kept it close, never faltering more than two points. A kill from Cutter sparked a 9-1 run for Springfield and his play at the net saw three of those points coming from blocks pushing the Pride ahead 18-9. Springfield continued to roll as a kill from Mulvaney allowed Springfield to take the first set, 25-18.
After losing the early lead to start the second set, the Lasers tied it up at six to then go on a 10-2 run to take a 15-8 lead. Preische then came in off the bench and made a statement, immediately registering a kill which powered the Pride to three straight points to cut the Lasers lead to five. Springfield had another three-point spurt which featured kills from Levinson and blocks from
Richard Eber Jr. (Hummelstown, Pa.) and Preische to tie it up at 19. The Pride finished the set with another three-point spurt with a kill from Preische and a block from Cutter and Mulvaney before a service ace from Preische gave the Pride the win, 25-22.
Both teams traded points in the third with a brief 5-1 run by the Pride giving the visitors the edge they would need to complete the sweep. A kill by Durivage and an ace by Mulvaney made it 9-5 and Springfield would maintain that lead until the score read 19-14. Another swing by Durivage ignited a 6-1 run to end the match as the kill was followed by an ace by Seveland, two Lasell errors, a solo block by
Billy Cavanagh (Yardley, Pa.) and one final error by the hosts. As a team, Springfield hit a match-best .391 (12-3-23) in the final set.
The Pride will head to nationally-ranked No. 6 NYU on Saturday for a 3:00 pm start.
