Babson Park, Mass. – February 7, 2026 – Despite a career-high 22 points from
Zachary Campbell (Philadelphia, Pa.), the Springfield College men's basketball team fell to Babson College, 71-56, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday afternoon inside Staake Gymnasium.
Babson, who swept the season series from the Pride improved to 15-6 overall and to 9-3 in NEWMAC play, while Springfield dropped to 8-14, 6-7.
Campbell finished the day with 22 points and shot 7-for-9 from the floor as well as 8-for-12 from the charity stripe to go along with a team-best six rebounds.
Josh Hartley (Brooklyn, N.Y.,) and
Hunter Matteson (Dartmouth, Mass.) both chipped in with seven points and three rebounds apiece. Babson had three in double figures highlighted by a 21 point performance from Thomas Ferdinando.
Springfield hit four of its first five shots, but trailed by a 15-10 margin eight minutes into the game. Buckets by Campbell and Hartley paired with a free throw from
Cedric Rodriguez (Burlington, Mass.) tied the score at 15 with under ten left in the opening half. Babson put together a 10-4 run over the next five minutes – a spurt that was capped on three's by both Tyler Lauder and Timmy Mulvey for a 28-21 lead before the hosts took a 31-24 lead into the break.
Campbell knocked down a pair of shots to open the second pulling the Pride within three at 31-28 and the game remained a one possession game until Mulvey buried back-to-back shot from behind the arc extending Babson's lead to eight at 43-35 with 13 left in the game. The host Beavers outscored Springfield 16-4 over a stretch of over six minutes late in the game as Babson went 5-for-7 from the floor and saw Ferdinando register nine of the points in the run to put the game out of reach.
Over the final four minutes of the game, Springfield was able to must just four buckets – but did see
Ajay Lopes (Wareham, Mass.) record four points. It wasn't enough as Babson took the game by a 71-56 final as the Beavers hit six of seven shots from the free throw line.
Springfield shot at a 40.9-percent clip from the floor and scored 34 of its 56 points in the paint. Babson held a 34-31 edge on the glass and turned 21 Springfield turnovers into 20 points this afternoon.
Springfield will travel to Salve Regina on Wednesday for a NEWMAC tilt at 7:00 pm from Rhode Island.
