Norton, Mass. - March 14, 2026 - The Springfield College women's lacrosse team defeated Wheaton College in its first New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) matchup of the season on Saturday afternoon, 19-9.
The Pride improve to 2-3 overall and start off at 1-0 in the NEWMAC while the Lyons drop to 4-2, 0-1.
Izzy Lalancette (Feeding Hills, Mass.) led the Pride after notching seven goals with five ground balls and three caused turnovers as Kristyn Vasselin (Hudson, Mass.), Liz Neri (Farmington, Conn.), Sarah Newton (Colchester, Conn.) and Payton Imhof (Bayshore, N.Y.) scored two apiece.
Hailey Gaydos (Newington, Conn.), Claire Ognibene (New Canaan, Conn.), Elyse Atland (North Bennington, Vt.) and Molly Forrest (Wakefield, Mass.) combined for 15 ground balls as Atland, Neri and Vasselin caused two turnovers each. Newton recorded 12 draw controls and Lindsay Hillemeir (Unionville, Conn.) picked up the win in goal and recorded three saves.
Lalancette scored the first goal of the game, coming at 12:14 before Newton tacked on another one just three minutes later. The Pride continued to dominate as Lily Johnson (Oceanside, N.Y.), Kaelynn Stringer (East Greenbush, N.Y.) and Vasselin added more to make it 5-0.
Ognibene scored 15 seconds into the second quarter off of a pass from Imhof to add another for Springfield before Wheaton tacked on its first goal of the game at 8:47 to make it 6-1. The Pride went on to outscore the Lyons 4-1 through the second quarter to make it 10-2 going into the halftime break.
Wheaton opened up the third quarter with a goal from Alexis Antonellis before Lalancette scored another for Springfield. The Lyons then scored two goals within less than two minutes from one another to bring it to 11-5. Both programs notched two more goals apiece in the third as the Pride continued to lead going into the final quarter, 13-8. In the fourth quarter, the Pride excelled and went on to score six more goals and held the Lyons to one as Springfield won the game 19-9.
The Pride held the edge in shots (47-17), ground balls (31-13) and draw controls (24-6) while going 15-for-17 on the clear.
Springfield will travel to Clearwater, Fla. to play Farmingdale State on Wednesday at 6:00 pm.
