Springfield, Mass. – March 8, 2026 – Big first and third quarters by Colby College lifted the Mules over the Springfield College men's lacrosse team in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon on Stagg Field.
Colby picked up its first win of the season and is now 1-2, while Springfield dropped to 2-3. Today's game was the first between the Mules and the Pride.
Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.) led Springfield with a pair of goals, while six other student-athletes for the Pride notched one goal. Webb,
Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) and
Charlie Vath (Southington, Conn.) ended the day with two points for the Pride.
Dominic Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) recorded a team-best five ground balls and won 12 face offs, while
Sal Posillico (Farmingdale, N.Y.) and
Zachary Rabin (Bay Shore, N.Y.) led the Pride with a pair of caused turnovers.
Gavin Rothenberg led Colby with five points on two goals and three assists, while Eli Chilicki notched a hat trick for the Mules. Both Tristan Bassett and Macon Burgess notched five ground balls with Bassett winning 12 of 18 face offs at the dot.
In net, Will Heisler notched 17 stops for Colby, While
Joseph Grenier (Cheshire, Conn.) made 15 saves in his first career start for the Pride.
Colby recorded the first six goals of the game before
Patrick McGowan (Haverhill, Mass.) finished a feed from
Bryan Stensrud (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) to put Springfield on the board early in the second. McGowan's goal ignited a 4-1 spurt for the Pride that also saw
Brady Soldo, Webb and
Ryan Berkel (Sudbury, Mass.)find the back of the cage to cut Springfield's deficit to three at 7-4 early in the third.
Colby responded with five straight goals and eight of the next nine to pull away pushing the Mules up 15-5. Springfield notched three goals over the final five minutes – one from Degnan, one from Webb and one from Vath to account for the 15-8 final.
Springfield out shot Colby, 51-39, and went 19-fof-21 on the clear, while both teams scooped up 29 ground balls today. Colby went 21-for-27 in transition, won 15-of-27 face offs and scored once on the man-advantage.
Springfield will host Merchant Marine on Wednesday at 5:00 pm in the first-ever meeting between the two sides.
