Men's Lacrosse Rallies Past Wheaton on Senior Day

Springfield, Mass. – April 11, 2026 – The Springfield College men's lacrosse team rallied from from first half deficit to defeat Wheaton College, 14-12, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday afternoon from Stagg Field.

Springfield improved to 8-4 overall and to 4-1 in NEWMAC play, while Wheaton dropped to 9-4, 2-3.

The Pride received three goals and three assists from Matt Webb (Northport, N.Y.), while Ryan Berkel (Sudbury, Mass.) chipped in with three goals, an assist, three ground balls and a caused turnover. Both Brady Soldo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Charlie Vath (Southington, Conn.) notched two goals apiece, while Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) contributed a goal, three assists and four ground balls. Dominic Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) was dominant on the face off winning 21-of-29 chances he had. In net, Joseph Grenier (Cheshire, Conn.) made eight saves to lift Springfield to the conference win.

Wheaton's Emmett Edwards ended the day with four goals and an assist for five points, while in net Evan Borchert made 17 saves on 31 shots faced.

As a team, Springfield held the differential in shots (43-30), ground balls (37-25) and face offs (22-8). The Pride also went 17-for-20 on the clear.

Webb and Nick Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) scored under a minute apart to push Springfield ahead 2-1 early in the first. From that point on, the two sides traded goals with neither team gaining more than a one goal edge. In the first quarter alone, Wheaton and Springfield combined for nine total goals.

Springfield trailed 5-4 after one but Berkel and Soldo notched back-to-back strikes putting the Pride ahead 6-5 with under nine minutes to play before halftime. Wheaton, however, responded and was the ones to take the lead into half as Edwards and Paturzo made it a 7-6 game. The Lyons then scored on the man-advantage early in the third for its largest differential of the game.

Springfield then saw tallies from Rory Scanlon (Maple Grove, Minn.), Degnan and Webb to forge head 9-8 with less than six to play in the third, but the offense from Edwards was unstoppable as he tied the game for the visitors at both nine and ten before Springfield's game-winning run occurred.

Less than a minute after Edwards found the equalizer, Webb put the Pride in front for good with an unassisted tally early in the fourth. Webb was followed by Berkel and Vath who gave Springfield its largest lead of the contest at 13-10. Wheaton was able to pull back within one with less than seven to play, but Bryan Stensrud (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) connected with Vath for an insurance goal with 1:52 left on the clock for the 14-12 victory.

Springfield will play its final non-conference regular season contest of the season on Wednesday as the Pride visit Vassar College at 4:00 pm.
