Baseball Reaches 20 Win Plateau For First Time Since 2019 Following 6-5 Victory Over Babson

Springfield, Mass. – April 21, 2026 – The Springfield College baseball team came from behind to defeat Babson College, 6-5, in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest played on Tuesday afternoon on Archie Allen Field.

Springfield, which improved to 20-11 on the season and 6-5 in NEWMAC play, reached the 20 win plateau for the first time since the 2019 campaign and for just the tenth time in Division III program history. Springfield has also now won three straight games against Babson dating back to last season – the first time that has happened since April of 2012.

At the top of Springfield's lineup, Tyler Casey (Wallingford, Conn.) and Chris Balchius (Norwalk, Conn.)both went 4-for-5 with two RBI and two stolen bases. Ryan Baker (North Reading, Mass.) earned the win out of the pen for the Pride going three shutout innings and allowing just one hit to go along with two strikeouts, while Jake Gombotz (South Windsor, Conn.) picked up hirst first save throwing the final two frames in the win.

Babson struck for three runs in the top of the first and eventually led 5-0 midway through the game. An RBI single by Balchius put Springfield on the board in the bottom of the fifth before the Pride exploded for four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Nicholas Lloyd (Easthampton, Mass.) began the inning with a triple to left center before Michael Lepere (Beacon, N.Y.) plated him with a knock up the middle. Casey then drilled a two run single scoring both Lepere and Dan Surette (Braintree, Mass.) with two outs. Balchius evened the game at five with an RBI single to left scoring Casey from second.

Springfield took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh when Lepere plated Nate Garafalo (Kinderhook, N.Y.), who began the frame with a hit through the right side. Gombotz entered the game in the eighth and despite allowing base runners over the final two innings secured the 6-5 NEWMAC win for the Pride on Tuesday.

Springfield will travel to RPI for a non-conference game tomorrow afternoon at 3:30 pm.
