Men's Lacrosse Defeats Salve Regina in Final Game of the Regular Season

Springfield, Mass. - April 26, 2026 - The Springfield College men's lacrosse team defeated New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Salve Regina on Saturday afternoon, 12-10.

The Pride finish the regular season 10-5 overall and 6-1 in the conference will the Seahawks drop to 9-5, 4-3.

Ryan Berkel (Sudbury, Mass.) led the Pride with three goals and two caused turnovers while Dominic Savastano (South Salem, N.Y.) tallied two goals, eight ground balls and won 15-of-25 faceoffs. Joseph Grenier (Cheshire, Conn.) tallied eight saves between the pipes.

As a team, Springfield held the edge in shots (55-22) and ground balls (42-24) while going 27-for-30 on the clear.

It was a slow start for both teams as only one goal was scored in the first quarter when Heath Sumwalt found the back of the net at 5:27 for Salve Regina. The Seahawks scored another goal early in the second quarter, before Patrick McGowan (Haverhill, Mass.) netted one for the Pride and Berkel added the equalizer shortly after. With 30 seconds left in the quarter, Bryan Stensrud (LaGrangeville, N.Y.) scored to give the Pride a 3-2 lead going into the halftime break.

The third quarter saw a lot of back-and-forth as the teams put up a combined 11 goals, all of which came within less than three minutes of one another. Springfield never lost the lead until Casey Johnson scored with one second left in the quarter to tie it up at eight.

Springfield scored early in the fourth quarter as Reece Whitney (Chester, Conn.) found Berkel for another goal to regain the lead but Salve Regina had an answer and the teams started to exchange goals. The Pride then went on to score the final two goals of the game when, after a Seahawk goal, Savastano won the faceoff and ran down the field to score before Jake Degnan (Mahopac, N.Y.) added an insurance goal with less than three minutes to play and Springfield got the win 12-10.

The Pride will host MIT on Thursday at 7:00 pm on Stagg Field in the semifinal round of the NEWMAC Tournament.
