Danbury, Conn. - September 12, 2026 - The Springfield College field hockey team rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Western Connecticut State, 3-1, on Saturday evening at the WestConn Athletic Complex.
Springfield improves to 3-1 overall, while Western Connecticut State falls to 3-3.
Rachel Simkewicz (Holden, Mass.) scored a goal and added an assist for Springfield while Ava Coppola (Southington, Conn.) and Lily Bialack (Westfield, Mass.) each tallied goals.
Western Connecticut struck first when Jaelyn Moulton scored off an assist from Madison Preston with less than five minutes left in the quarter. The Pride then answered in the second quarter, as Coppola found the back of the cage off an assist from Simkewicz at 20:58 to even the score at 1-1.
After a scoreless third quarter, Springfield took its first lead of the game when Simkewicz scored with less than ten minutes remaining in the fourth quarter before Bialack added an insurance goal at 56:28 to make it 3-1.
The Pride dominated offensively, as they outshot Western Connecticut State 35-4 and held a 25-1 edge in penalty corners. Sam Orcutt (Forestdale, Mass.) made one save in the win, while Western Connecticut State goalkeeper Brooklyn Testa made 20 saves.
The Pride are back in action on Wednesday when they host Trinity College (Conn.) at 6:00 pm.
