WELLESLEY, Mass. – October 11, 2008 – The Wellesley College tennis team defeated New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference opponent Springfield College, on Saturday afternoon to remain unbeaten in NEWMAC play. The 9-0 win sets the Blue’s record to 6-0 (all NEWMAC contests) while Springfield falls to 2-6 overall, with a 1-5 NEWMAC record.
Wellesley took a 3-0 lead over Springfield after the doubles matches, and then swept the singles to finish with the 9-0 team victory. Shivani Saxena and Grace Cheng each recorded two wins for Wellesley on the afternoon.
Cheng teamed up with Marie Watanabe to take their first flight doubles match, 8-6, over the Pride’s Amy Shaw and Melissa Weinstein while Saxena recorded an 8-0 number two doubles win with partner Jacquelina Shen over Rachel Kushma and Tayla Pessolano. In the third doubles match of the day, Meghan Stubblebine and Katie Ching were 8-0 winners over the Pride pair of Funmi Olowookere and Kyla Walgren.
In singles, Saxena was a 6-1, 6-1 winner at first singles over Shaw, Nathalie Herman won her second flight match 7-5, 6-3 over Weinstein and Cheng won her third singles match over Kushma, 6-0, 6-1.
Elsewhere on the singles ladder, Dara Azuma defeated Olowookere, 6-0, 6-1, Malika Hayashi was a 7-6(0), 6-0 winner over Walgren, and Anjalee Martin cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Pessolano.
Springfield is back in action on Tuesday with a 4:00 pm road match against Mount Holyoke.
