DUDLEY, Mass. – October 15, 2008 – The Springfield College menÂ's tennis team defeated Nichols in non-conference fall action Wednesday afternoon. The Pride (2-1) held a 2-1 lead after doubles and clinched with Bobby SchlinkÂ's (Quaker Hill, Conn.) 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over Tyler McLaughlin (Hollis, N.H.) at No. 3 singles. Nichols slips to 0-2 in the early season.
Schlink and senior Andrew Constant (Kingston, N.Y.) combined for an 8-6 win over McLaughlin and Jack Baker (Cheshire, Conn.) at No. 1 doubles. Constant also posted a 6-3, 6-1 victory at the top singles spot over Stephen Carella (Rocky Hill, Conn.).
Tim Tunis (Sudbury, Mass.) and Zach OÂ'Leary (Westborough, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-4 win over Eliot Wuhrmann (Fontainbleau, France) and Oliver McNutt (East Lyme, Conn.) at No. 2 doubles, but Nichols picked up a doubles point with a win in the third spot as Carella and Dan Saucier (Newington, Conn.) edged Phil OÂ'Sullivan (Old Greenwich, Conn.) and Mike McGee (Pawtucket, R.I.), 8-5.
In singles play for the Bison, Baker picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Tunis at No. 2 singles, and Wurhmann earned his first collegiate victory at No. 4 singles, rallying for a 5-7, 7-5, 1-0 (10-6) win over OÂ'Leary. McNutt also picked up his first career singles win, holding on for a marathon 6-2, 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (11-9) win over McGee at fifth singles.
Both teams are idle until the traditional spring season begins.
