CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – October 4, 2008 – Senior midfielder Lauren Peltier broke a scoreless tie in the 70th minute to lift Springfield College to a 1-0 victory over MIT in NEWMAC womenÂ's soccer action at Roberts Field on Saturday.
With today’s win, head coach John Gibson won his 100th game at Springfield College.
Springfield (6-2-2, 1-0-1) controlled the tempo for most of afternoon, outshooting the Engineers, 14-3. The Pride held a 5-2 advantage in shots at the break, although neither team was able to generate a sustained attack.
MITÂ's (3-6-0, 1-1-0) resiliency was apparent throughout the match and resulted in a physical game. Thirty-one fouls were called during the tilt.
Springfield secured the only marker of the day in the 70th minute on a terrific boot by Peltier. Taking a pass from junior Caitlin Sawczuk, Peltier drilled a line-drive from 35 yards out in the middle of the pitch. The well-struck ball began to sail as it reached the goal before lifting beyond the out-stretched hands of goalkeeper Stephanie Brenman.
MIT produced one good chance at delivering the equalizer on a near-breakaway by rookie Alisha Lussiez in the 75th minute, but the opportunity was thwarted as a Springfield defender slid in front of LussiezÂ's shot on goal and deflected away the open on-net attempt.
Brenman finished with nine saves in the loss while Springfield net minder Sue Jenney made two stops en route to the shut out.
