Springfield, Mass. – November 8, 2008 – With its fourth-straight 4-0 victory, the Springfield College women’s soccer team advanced past MIT on a rainy Saturday afternoon to move on to the New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Tournament Championship. The top-seeded Pride will take on second-seeded Wheaton, who slipped past Clark, 1-0, in the other semifinal.
Springfield improves to 14-3-2 on the year, while the Engineers season comes to a close with a 7-9-2 mark.
The Pride only held a 9-3 advantage in shots for the entire game, but made the most of it’s strikes, connecting on four of them for goals.
Nicole Hanewich opened up the scoring for the home team in the 13th minute as he headed home a Delaney Cantrall corner kick into the lower right corner for her team-leading ninth-goal of the year.
Springfield tacked on its second goal of the game just before halftime as Maria Evans headed home a Brittany Collins’ shot that caromed off the crossbar at the 43:18 mark.
Just under 10 minutes into the second stanza, the Pride struck for its third tally of the game, this time from Shanda Kogut. Kogut took a touch pass inside the box from Hanewich, and blasted home a left-footed strike for the Pride’s third goal.
Jackie Moscardelli closed out Springfield’s scoring in the game as headed in a Nicole Baker cross at the 68 minute mark. It was Moscardelli’s fourth goal of the year, and third in her last four matches.
Sue Jenney earned the win in goal as she notched the shutout, making just two saves. Stephanie Brenman finished with three stops for MIT.
Wheaton 1, Clark 0
Springfield, Mass. – November 8, 2008 – Sophomore back Alessia Viscomi (Newton, Mass.) scored a goal with 1:05 left in regulation to lift the Wheaton College womenÂ's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Clark University in a New England WomenÂ's and MenÂ's Athletic Conference post-season tournament semifinal contest this evening at Springfield CollegeÂ's Brock-Affleck Field.
With the win, #2-seeded Wheaton will meet #1-seeded Springfield College for the NEWMAC title Sunday at Brock-Affleck Field. Earlier today, Springfield defeated #5-seeded MIT, 4-0.
Wheaton is now 16-4-2 overall, while Clark is 7-10-1.
Wheaton outshot the Cougars, 13-2, and had six corner kicks to ClarkÂ's none. The Lyons hit posts twice as they clearly dominated the contest.
But the Lyons could not convert until Viscomi tallied on a failed clearance off a Wheaton corner kick. The goal was unassisted.
The CougarsÂ' goalkeeper, junior Joanna Clark (Windham, Me.) made an impressive diving save in the first half off a Lyndsey McManus shot to keep things level at zero. McManus, a junior from Marshfield, Mass. later made a great defensive effort of her own as she headed away a shot from ClarkÂ's Erin Peete, which seemed destined to hit the net. Peete is a freshman forward from Clinton, Mass.
Clark finished the day with three saves, while the LyonÂ's Lindsay Leddy, a freshman from Warwick, R.I., compiled one save with the win.
