SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — April 9, 2008 — Sophomore Trevor Romanzi (Bayshore, N.Y.) defeated his opponent, 6-0, 6-0, in singles to lead his Springfield College men’s tennis team to 7-2 victory earlier today versus Coast Guard in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference match at SC’s Appleton Courts.
With the win, Springfield is now 5-4 overall, 2-1 in the NEWMAC. Coast Guard is 2-9 overall, 0-3 in league play. It was Springfield’s third straight win, and fourth in its last five outings.
Romanzi defeated Brett Sillman at No. 4 singles. He also teamed with senior Rahul Bala (Enfield, Conn.) at No. 2 doubles to win, 8-1.
Springfield jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play was complete. The Pride then won five of six singles matches. All the singles matches went straight sets. SC’s only loss in singles came at No. 2, where Chris Pappe defeated senior Joe Lisi (Southbridge, Mass.).
Pappe also teamed with Ryan Beck at No. 1 doubles for the Bears’ other win. That duo won, 8-6.
Meanwhile, others to win for Springfield were junior Andrew Constant (Kingston, N.Y.) at No. 1 singles, Bala at No. 3, junior Bobby Schlink (Quaker Hill, Conn.) at No. 5, and sophomore Tim Tunis (Sudbury, Mass.) at No. 6. Schlink and Tunis also combined to win at No. 3 doubles, 8-1.
