SPRINGFIELD, MASS., September 17, 2008 – The Springfield College womenÂ's soccer team lost at home for the first time in over a year as Williams defeated the Pride, 2-0, on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.
The Ephs, currently ranked fifth in the country in the latest national polls, improve to 3-0 on the season while the Pride fall to 3-2.
Springfield, which went 12-0-1 last year at home, lost for the first time on its home pitch since Oct. 14, 2006, when it fell to Smith College, 1-0.
Williams struck at the 12:39 mark as they took advantage of a loose ball just outside of the 18-yard box.
Brianna Wolfson snagged the ball and dribbled into the box, beating Springfield keeper Sue Jenney (Agawam, Mass.) and finding the back of the net from eight yards out for her third goal of the season. Williams went on to control much of the action in the first half, holding a 7-3 advantage in shots.
The visitors wasted no time scoring their second goal of the game, this time just under six minutes into the second stanza. Gabrielle Woodson dribbled the ball to her right just outside the box before bending a well-placed shot into the upper right hand corner to give Williams a 2-0 advantage.
For the game, Williams held a 15-5 advantage in shots and a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Jenney finished the game with five saves, while Lauren Sinnenberg and Julia Schreiber combined for the shutout.
Springfield returns to action on Saturday afternoon when it travels to take on RPI at 12:00 pm.
