Springfield, Mass. – September 12, 2009 – The Springfield College womenÂ's soccer team and Brandeis battled to a scoreless tie on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Brock-Affleck Field. The Pride, currently ranked 18th in the country, move to 3-0-1 on the season and have played three overtime games this season. Brandeis now owns a record of 2-1-1.
The Judges nearly scored with 28 minutes remaining in the first half as a mix up in communication the Pride backline left BrandeisÂ' Tiffany Pacheco with a look at a wide open net. However, her bid from 20 yards out sailed just left, as the game remained scoreless.
The teams played a very even first half with each totaling seven shots and each goalkeeper recording a pair of saves.
SpringfieldÂ's best scoring chance in the second half came with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. The Pride was awarded a free kick at the top of the box but was unable to convert as Katie MantieÂ's shot sailed above the crossbar. Neither team could record a goal in regulation as the game headed for overtime
The Pride nearly ended the game three minutes into the first overtime session as Mantie had a terrific scoring chance after she collected a loose ball from 20 yards. Mantie dribbled in one on one with the Brandeis goalkeeper, Hillary Rosenzweig, but her shot from six yards out went high.
The Judges responded with a flurry of chances down at the other end of the field for the rest of the first overtime, but were unable to find the back of the net.
The best chance in the second overtime for either team came off a corner kick with 2:25 remaining. Springfield’s Jen Courossi had a great look at the goal from eight yards out but her shot also sailed high.
Rosenzweig and Hanna MacDougall each finished with shutouts for the game and each finished with four saves.
Brandeis finished the game with a 16-14 advantage in shots, while the Pride owned a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.
Springfield returns to action on Wednesday afternoon when it travels to take on Williams in a battle of two of the top teams in New England. The Ephs are currently ranked third in the country.
