Santa Cruz, Calif. — Jan. 16, 2010 — The Cal Baptist University men’s volleyball team, a power in the NAIA, defeated Springfield College, 3 games to 1, earlier today at the West Field House at UC-Santa Cruz. With the loss, No. 2-ranked SC ends its two-game California trip at 0-2.
The Lancers, located in Riverside, Calif., won by game scores of 30-18, 33-35, 31-29, 30-25.
With the victory, Cal Baptist is now 4-2, which includes victories over three top 10 institutions in the latest Division I poll, UCLA among them.
For Springfield, Alex Harrison played well, leading his squad with 15 kills. He only had four errors in 34 swings, hitting .324. Cal Palumbo hit a fantastic .692 on nine kills (with no errors) on 13 attempts. Eric Shoemaker wound up with 44 set assists, while Harrison and Shoemaker each had four digs. Palumbo also contributed with five blocks. AJ Nally was second on the squad in kills with 10. Palumbo and Jeff Gutman each finished with nine kills.
After losing game #1, 30-18, Springfield hit .469 in game #2, which went a long way towards winning that game, 35-33. In pivotal game #3, SC hit .300 to Cal Baptist’s .278, but could not pull it out.
Overall, SC hit .192 to the Lancers’ .275.
Springfield will continue its road show when it plays at Vassar next Friday (Jan. 22) at 5:00 pm.
