Fairfield, Conn. – January 26, 2010 – The Springfield College men’s volleyball team picked up its first road victory of the season as it topped Sacred in four games on Tuesday evening. The Pride, which racked up 18 team blocks in the victory, won by the set scores of 30-17, 26-30, 30-24, 30-22.
The Pride, which entered the match as the third-ranked team in the country in Tuesday’s AVCA Division III MenÂ's Top 15 Coaches Poll, improved to 2-3 on the season.
Three players notched double digit kills for the Pride, with Alberto Bravo leading the way with a career-best 15 kills and 12 digs in his first season with Springfield. AJ Nally posted a double-double as well with 18 digs and 10 kills, to go along with six blocks, while Alex Harrison chipped in with 12 kills. Libero Mike Pelletier added a career-best 11 digs for the visiting Pride.
All-American Cal Palumbo continued to be nearly flawless this season as he connected for nine kills on just 10 swings, finishing with a .800 hitting percentage to go along with seven blocks and six digs. Fellow middle Greg Falcone was a stalwart at the net as he registered a career-best 10 blocks and notched seven kills. All-American Eric Shoemaker stuffed the stat sheet as he finished the match with 50 assists, seven digs, four aces, and four blocks.
As a team, the Pride finished with 18 team blocks, including 28 block assists. On the offensive side of the ball, SC came out of the gates unstoppable as it hit .500 in the first stanza. The Pride eventually cooled off throughout the reminder of the match as it finished with a .201 hitting percentage.
Springfield will complete its home-and-home series with Sacred Heart on Thursday evening when it hosts the Pioneers at 7:00 pm in Blake Arena.
