Springfield, Mass. — October 12, 2010 — The Mount Holyoke women’s tennis team defeated Springfield College, 5-4, in an important New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference match this afternoon at SC’s Julius Appleton Courts.
With the win, the Lyons improve to 3-6 overall, 3-4 in league play. SC falls to 3-6 overall, 1-5 in NEWMAC play.
Mount Holyoke was down for most of the day, but came back to win the final two singles matches at No. 6 singles, then at No. 2 singles to give the Lyons the win. SC led 2-1 after doubles. MHC tied it at 2-all by winning at No. 3 singles. SC’s Amy Shaw won at No. 1 to again put the Pride up, 3-2.
The Lyons won at No. 5 singles to tie matters at 3-all. But sophomore Erin Woodbury (Yarmouth, Me.) won a hard-fought straight-set match with two tiebreaker wins to give SC a 4-3 advantage.
But Mount Holyoke won at No. 6 singles in a third-set. And finally, in a marathon match, senior Elise Marifian (Belleville, Ill.) prevailed over sophomore Sam Carney (Franklin, Mass.), also in a third-set in No. 2 singles, 3-6, 6-1, 6-3.
It was Senior Day at Springfield, as SC honored Kristi Maltz (Waterford, Conn.),Talya Pessolano (Springfield, Mass.), co-captain Amy Shaw (Walpole, Mass.), and co-captain Kyla Walgren (West Hartford, Conn.).
