Springfield, Mass. — October 9, 2010 — Freshman Lauren Quisenberry led her MIT women’s tennis team to a 6-3 victory over Springfield College this afternoon on a sunny and breezy day at SC’s Julius Appleton Courts. With the win, MIT ups its record to 5-2 overall, 5-1 in NEWMAC play. The Pride falls to 3-5 overall, 1-4 in the league.
Quisenberry (Corpus Christi, Tex.) had a good day, first teaming up with fellow freshman Julia Hsu (Knoxville, Tenn.) to win at No. 1 doubles, 8-2. Quisenberry later won her match at No. 1 singles, defeating SC senior co-captain Amy Shaw (Walpole, Mass.), 6-0, 6-0.
MIT won all three doubles matches, setting the tone.
When Quisenberry won at No. 1 singles, and senior Jenny Dohlman (Wellesley, Mass.) won at No. 6 singles, MIT garnered all the team points it would need to capture the match.
At No. 2, Hsu defeated sophomore Sam Carney (Franklin, Mass.), 6-4, 7-6(2), in a hard-fought match.
Springfield fought back to win the No. 3 through 5 singles. Freshman Jen Cleary (Nahant, Mass.) was a winner at No. 3, 6-4, 6-4; sophomore Erin Woodbury (Yarmouth, Me.) took a marathon match at No. 4, 7-5, 7-6 (12-10 in the tiebreaker); and senior co-captain Kyla Walgren (West Hartford, Conn.) won at No. 5, 6-3, 6-2.
