Northampton, Mass. – November 13, 2010 – The Springfield College womenÂ's swimming and diving team cruised past local-foe Smith College, 173-122, on Saturday afternoon. The Springfield women were winners in eight of the fourteen swimming events, and had two multiple event winners.
Jaclyn VanWaalwijk garnered two victories for the Pride, sprinting to wins in the 50 yard freestyle with a time of 0:25.81, and the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 0:55.87. Freshman Nicole Stracqualursi got her first two collegiate victories in the 100 yard and 200 yard breaststroke events. She finished the 100 yard in 1:13.22 and got the win in the 200 yard in 2:41.81. Freshman Kellie Pennington responded to being named NEWMAC WomenÂ's swimmer of the week with a win in the 200 yard freestyle. Pennington finished with a time of 1:59.67, more than five full seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Kerry Lynch followed PenningtonÂ's lead in the next event, winning the 100 yard backstroke in a time of 1:04.43.
Others that swam well for the Pride included Molly Potter, who captured a win in the 200 yard butterfly, swimming ahead of the pack in 2:23.31, and Kelsey Poole, who won the 100 yard butterly in 1:04.07. The Pride also won the opening relay event of the meet, with the foursome of Lynch, Stracqualursi, Poole, and Pennington teaming to take the 400 yard medley in a time of 4:19.75.
In diving, the Springfield women swept both the one- and three-meter events. Courtney Keefe was victorious in the one-meter, posting a score of 228.45, and Jennifer Thompson took the three-meter with a score of 243.40.
The Pride women head to Norton, Mass. next Saturday for a tri-meet with Wheaton College and Keene State. Events will get underway at 1:00pm.
