New London, Conn. – November 3, 2010 – Danny Amato and Sean Nunan both scored their first collegiate goals to lead fifth-seeded Springfield to a 2-0 win over fourth-seeded Coast Guard in the first round of to the New England WomenÂ's and MenÂ's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) tournament.
The Pride advance to the semifinals and will take on top-seed and host Babson on Saturday morning at 10:30. Second-seeded MIT will play third-seeded Wheaton in the second semifinal at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday. The NEWMAC Championship Game will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Babson.
Amato blasted a shot in the upper right corner in thte 29th minute for the only goal of the first half.
Nunan was taken down by Coast Guard goalkeeper Chris Tarbell in the 79th minute and responded as he also used the upper right corner on the penalty kick to close the scoring.
Springfield won its third straight contest to improve to 12-7-1 and advances to the NEWMAC tournament semifinals for the first time since 2007.
The Pride outshot Coast Guard 17-11. Sophomore Chris Walton did not need to make a save to register Springfield’s eighth shutout of the season. The eight clean sheets stands as the third highest single-season total in program history.
Coast Guard (7-9-1) senior Chris Tarbell had four saves in the final game of his career.
Springfield is now 4-2-1 all-time vs. Coast Guard in NEWMAC tournament play and 2-2-1 in first round play.
