ECSU Captures Springfield Invitational With 3-1 Win Over Roger Williams; Springfield Blanks Westfield State, 2-0

Springfield, Mass. – September 5, 2010Katie Mantie and Brittany Collins each found the back of the net within the first seven minutes of the second half as the Springfield College womenÂ's soccer team downed Westfield State, 2-0, on Sunday evening.

The game served as the consolation of the Springfield Invitational. The Pride now improves to 1-1 on the season, while the Owls drop to 0-2.

After a scoreless first 45 minutes, Springfield wasted no time taking control of the game in the second half. Mantie started the offensive spurt as she pumped in the PrideÂ's first goal of the season 1:57 into the half. With her back to the goal, Suzanne Silva flicked a ball over the Westfield State goalkeeper Jess Habif, and Mantie ran onto the ball, forcing it over the goal line as Springfield took a 1-0 advantage.

Springfield continued to click on offense as Collins tallied a marker of the year in the 52nd minute. Collins took a feed from Erica Donnelly and lofted a shot from 25 yards out that found the back of the net over the outstretched arms of Habif.

That would be all the scoring Erin Greenstein would need to post her first collegiate win and shutout in goal as she made four saves. Habif finished the contest with four saves as well.

The Pride return to action Wednesday afternoon when it travels to take on local-rival Western New England at 4:00 pm.

ECSU 3, Roger Williams 1

In the title game of the Springfield Invitational, Kelly Wallace netted two second half goals as Eastern Connecticut State toppled Roger Williams, 3-1, on Sunday evening.

The win boosts the Warriors record to 2-0 on the season, while Roger Williams drops to 1-1.

Neither team could find the back of the net if the first half, but that changed when ECSU finally broke into the scoring column after a Rachel Cutler goal. After a scramble in front of the net forced the ball just outside of the 18 yard box, Cutler sent a lofting shot towards the goal. Unfortunately for RWU, goalkeeper Kelsey McGee was unable to corral the ball as it crossed the goal line and gave the Warriors a 1-0 advantage.

ECSU tacked on its second goal of the frame in the 72nd minute. Daniela Marchitto slipped a beautiful pass through the Hawks defense, which Kelly Wallace ran onto and slotted home for her first goal of the game. Wallace added her second strike with 10:05 remaining as she fired home a rebound after MarchittoÂ's initial shot was saved.

The Hawks slipped home the game’s final goal as Jessica Reade finished a Noelle Marston pass with just 50 seconds remaining in regulation.

For the contest, Mackenize MacLeod earned the win as she notched three saves. McGee finished with six saves between the pipes
