Springfield, Mass. – October 18, 2011 – Senior Jackie Moscardelli tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Springfield College women’s soccer team to a 3-1 win against Clark University in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday night at Brock-Affleck Field.
The Pride improve to 10-3-1 overall and 6-0-1 in NEWMAC play as it re-entered the national rankings today and stands at 21st in the NSCAA National Poll. Clark falls to 4-8-2 overall and 2-3-1 in the conference. The victory sets up a key showdown on Saturday when the Pride take on Babson in a rematch of last season’s NEWMAC Championship contest.
Midway through the first half, the Pride got on the scoreboard. Jenelle Jahoda threw the ball in to freshman Kelly Ziogas, who delieverd a long pass to Moscardelli right in front of the Clark net. Moscardelli corralled the ball in stride and fired a shot past Clark goalie Audrey Eisemann for the gameÂ's first goal in the 20th minute.
Less than two minutes into the second half, Springfield extended its lead. Moscardelli led a break in transition and found Katie Mantie up ahead. Mantie took two dribbles and gently lifted a shot over the outstretched reach of Eisemann for the PrideÂ's second goal and a 2-0 lead.
The Pride attack continued to keep pushing and struck again in the 59th minute as Courtney Letourneau and Erica Donnelly connected on some great teamwork to give Springfield a 3-0 advanatge. After Letourneau dropped a pass to Donnelly, Donnelly immediately back-heeled a pass in return, which Letourneau collected and fired from thirty yards out for the score.
The Cougars would get one back at the 67:14 mark. Off of a Pride turnover in the its zone, sophomore Afra Danai gained possession and flipped an arcing shot over Pride goalie Erin GreensteinÂ's reach to cut the deficit to 3-1.
Springfield had the edge in total shots, 14-11, and corner kicks, 4-2. Cougar goalie Audrey Eisemann grabbed four saves while Pride stopper Greenstein snared two of her own.
The Pride will travel to play Babson on Saturday afternoon with first-place in the conference standings on the line. Kick-off is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
