Springfield, Mass. – October 25, 2011 – The Springfield College womenÂ's soccer team defeated Western New England, 3-1, in the PrideÂ's regular season home finale on Tuesday evening at Brock-Affleck Field. Katie Mantie scored twice for the Pride in the win.
The Pride has now rattled off eight straight wins to improve to 12-3-1. Springfield continued to climb in the national rankings as it moved up a pair of spots to 19th in the country in today’s NSCAA Division III National Poll. The Golden Bears dropped to 4-13-2 with the loss.
The Pride wasted little time scoring as it found the back of the net just 4:16 into the matchup. Senior Jackie Moscardelli sent a long header towards the box, which Katie Mantie took up the right side toward Western New EnglandÂ's charging goalie, Victoria Trezise. Mantie lifted the ball over TresizeÂ's head to give the hosts an early lead.
Springfield added a second goal at the 26:39 mark of the second half. Moscardelli was once again credited with the assist as she crossed a pass to Ashley Carresi directly in front of the Western New England net. Carresi slotted an easy shot into the goal to put the Pride up by 2-0.
The Golden Bears would get one back eight minutes later. Taylor Mazurski fired from the left side and Pride goalie Hanna MacDougallÂ's save bounced right back to her. Mazurski wouldnÂ't miss a second time, and her strike brought the visitors back within a goal at 2-1.
At the 87:40 mark, Springfield added an insurance goal. Mantie found herself alone from twenty 20 yards out after a great look by Amber Thornton and ripped a shot into the top right corner past a leaping Trezise for the final goal of the contest.
Springfield outshot Western New England 22-8 for the contest. Trezise stopped six Pride shots while MacDougall grabbed four saves of her own.
The Pride will conclude its regular season on Saturday afternoon when it takes on Mount Holyoke at 1:00 pm in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest.
