Baltimore, Md. – November 12, 2011 – Katie Mantie found the back of the net in the 14th minute and Jenelle Jahoda tacked on a goal in the 31st minute to lead the Springfield College women’s soccer team to a 2-0 shutout win over Cabrini in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship on Saturday night.
Springfield will now advance to take on host Johns Hopkins, who dispatched Eastern Connecticut, 6-1 on Saturday. The Blue Jays are 20-0 on the year and are ranked fourth in the nation.
The Pride, who is now unbeaten in its last 13 contests and ranked 24th nationally, improved to 15-3-2 with the win.
Mantie wasted little time scoring Springfield’s first goal as she found the back on the net on an unassisted strike just 13:48 into the game. The senior striker ripped a shot between two defenders from the top of the box for her team-leading 14th goal of the season. It proved to be Mantie’s eighth game-winning goal of the season, which is the second-highest total in Division III women’s soccer.
Jahoda scored her first goal of the season with 30:35 on the clock in what would prove to be an insurance goal. The senior let loose a shot from 30 yards out and tucked it just underneath the cross bar for the game’s final tally.
Springfield dominated play statistically as it outshot Cabrini 16-2, and held a 7-2 edge in corner kicks.
Erin Greenstein needed to make just one save to earn her 11th shutout win of the year.
