Springfield, Mass. — September 27, 2011 — The Springfield College women’s tennis team defeated Clark University, 5-0, in a rain-shortened New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference match this afternoon, giving SC head coach Toby Coffin his first win and first conference win at SC.
Coffin was hired and began his tenure here on campus in late August.
Today’s match began outdoors with Springfield taking a 3-0 lead in doubles.
The rains them came, and the match moved indoors to the SC Field House.
At No. 1 doubles, the SC duo of junior Sam Carney (Franklin, Mass.) and sophomore Jen Cleary (Nahant, Mass.) bested Clark senior Julia Bergeron (Lewiston, Me.) and sophomore Sarah Sachs (Branford, Conn.), 8-0.
At No. 3 doubles, the SC pair of junior Vanessa Senecal (Seekonk, Mass.) and sophomore Sydney Streimer (Mystic, Conn.) defeated sophomore Virginia Cooke (Shelton, Conn.) and Rose Burberry-Martin, 8-2.
Finally, at No. 2 doubles, it was the SC tandem of junior Erin Woodbury (Portland, Me.) and junior Siana Greene (Pomfret, Conn.) edging junior Maggie Swann (Portland, Me.) and junior Kristen Cullity (Carver, Mass.), 8-6.
With the match moved indoors, it was Woodbury, at No. 3 singles, defeating Swann, 6-2, 6-0. That gave SC a 4-0 lead.
Wrapping it up was Carney at No. 1 singles, defeating Sachs, 6-1, 6-3.
Springfield is now 1-4 overall, 1-3 in the NEWMAC. Clark falls to 0-5 overall, 0-4 in the league.
SC will host Suffolk on Monday (Oct. 3) at 4:00 pm.
