Box Score

Springfield, Mass. — September 4, 2011 — The Springfield College womenÂ's soccer team surrendered a goal in the opening 11 minutes of play and couldnÂ't rally as it dropped a 1-0 decision to local-foe Westfield State in the Springfield College Invitational on Sunday evening.

The win brings Westfield State to 2-0 on year, while the Pride drop to 1-1 this season.

Westfield State opened up the scoring at the 10:29 mark of the first half on a marker by Kayley Miller. After Leann Rivard slipped a pass through the Springfield defense, Milley took a touch and fired a low shot underneath a diving Hanna MacDougall just inside the right post.

That would prove to be the only goal of the evening as the Owls held on for the shutout victory. Westfield State owned an 8-7 advantage in shots, while the Pride took three of the contest’s four corner kicks.

MacDougall took the loss as she made four saves in the evening. Jess Habif picked up the shutout win between the pipes while making three saves.

Springfield returns to action on Wednesday evening when it hosts Rhode Island College at 7:00 pm.

Vassar 2, Lasell 1
Kelsey Domb scored a goal in the 81st minute to lead her Vassar College women’s soccer team to a consolation round victory over Lasell, 2-1, early this evening in the Springfield College Invitational at the Irv Schmid Sports Complex. With the win, Vassar is now 1-1 in this tourney, while Lasell is 0-2.

The Brewers dominated play in this match overall, owning an 18-6 edge in shots, including a 9-2 advantage in the first half.

Between the pipes, junior Ali Higgins (Dallas, Tex.) made four saves to earn the win for Vassar. Her counterpart, senior Elizabeth Stickley (Mashpee, Mass.), made a total of nine saves.

The scoring got underway in the 33rd minute of the first half. Senior defender Alex Grant (Coral Gables, Fla.) put the Brewers up by a score of 1-0 after she directed a header into the back of the net. The assist was provided by freshman midfielder Sarah Bourenane (Carrollton, Tex.) off a corner kick.

It remained 1-0 through the half.

In the 58th minute, the Lasers evened the score at 1-all. After a terrific inside feed from sophomore forward Jamie Harris (Lynnfield, Mass.) into the box, freshman forward Bridget Lynch (Dover, N.H.) broke free with a one-on-one with the Vassar keeper Higgins. Lynch pushed the ball past Higgins over the goal line.

Vassar struck for the game-winner in the 81st minute on an impressive strike by Domb, a freshman midfielder from Round Rock, Tex.. After a long through ball by sophomore midfielder Kylie Ladenberger (Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Domb ran onto the ball and calmly slotted home a shot from 10 yards out, by the sprawling Stickley.

Lasell had one more golden chance to tie it with just under four minutes remaining, but sophomore defender Jamie Osterberg’s (Monroe, Conn.) bid from 12 yards out was snuffed out by Higgins.
