MIT Edges Field Hockey, 1-0

Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – October 13, 2012Timarie Villa recorded 14 saves in goal but it wasn’t enough as MIT edged the Springfield College field hockey team, 1-0, in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday morning as part of Homecoming weekend.

The Engineers, who received votes in this week’s NFHCA National Poll, improved to 12-2, 5-1 in league play. Springfield falls to 6-7, 4-2.

MIT was relentless on offense in the opening 35 minutes of play, peppering the Springfield defense with 14 shots. However, Villa kept the Pride in the game, posting 10 of her 14 saves.

The visitors finally broke through 6:33 into the second half for the game’s only goal. Elizabeth Dethy was credited with the assist after she delivered a past Kimberly Barker on the goal line. Barker fired a shot passed an outstretched Villa that snuck just inside the back post for the game-winner.

MIT owned a 22-3 advantage in shots and a 14-5 cushion in penalty corners in the contest. Jenna Klein needed to make just one save, a key stop in transition on Kelly Gallo late in the second half.

The Pride will play its next three games on the road, beginning on Wednesday when it travels to battle Trinity in non-conference play.
