Men's Volleyball Wins Vassar Invitational

Poughkeepsie, N.Y. – March 31, 2012 – The Springfield College men’s volleyball team defeated both Johnson and Wales and host Vassar to win the Vassar Invitational on Saturday. The Pride opened up the second day sweeping JWU, 25-15, 25-17, 25-16, before grinding out a 21-25, 25-15, 25-13, 25-27, 15-10 win over Vassar.

The Pride is now 25-5 on the season, matching the most wins in a season since the 1974-75 team won 25 matches. Springfield has won its last 13 matches, tying to longest winning streak since the 2003 team rattled off 13-straight victories.

Greg Falcone was dominant all weekend and was named the Invitational’s Most Valuable Player. Fellow middle Jimmy O’Leary joined Falcone on the All-Tournament Team.

Springfield’s offense had its way with the Johnson and Wales Wildcats, hitting .450 for the contest. Evan Acanfora powered the way for the Pride with 15 kills at a .571 clip, while John Coen added 11 kills and three aces. O’Leary hit .900 out of the middle with nine kills and Jordan Robinson picked up a team-best seven digs. Mike Becker finished the match with 30 assists and Ryan Lilley added 10 helpers.

In the five-set win over the Brewers, Springfield hit .409 and totaled 75 kills, its highest output for kills in a match this season. Becker tied a career-high with 64 assists, while Mike Pelletier had 15 kills, hitting .406, to go along with 20 digs. Falcone had his way all match, notching 16 kills and eight blocks while hitting .667. Alistair Matthews totaled a team-best 18 kills and both O’Leary and Angel Perez tallied 11 kills. Nick Ferry finished with a match-best 22 digs.

The Pride finished with 33 more kills than Vassar did, but let Vassar hang around as it committed 25 service errors.

Springfield will next play on this upcoming weekend when it competes in the MIT Invitational.
