Cambridge, Mass. – April 6, 2012 – The Springfield College men’s volleyball team opened up the MIT Invitational on Friday with three-game sweeps of Philadelphia Biblical and Bard. Springfield started the day with a 25-12, 25-11, 25-19 win over Philadelphia Biblical before taking down Bard 25-16, 25-17, 25-21.
The Pride has now won 15-straight matches to improve to 27-5 on the year, matching the most wins in program history. Both the 1971 and 1972 teams recorded 27 wins as well.
In the opener over Philadelphia Biblical, Mike Pelletier had nine kills at a .500 clip to go along with five digs, while Angel Perez added six kills, six digs, and three blocks. Reigning AVCA National Player of the Week Greg Falcone totaled four kills and four blocks and fellow middle Jimmy O’Leary racked up six blocks, four kills, and three aces. Mike Becker let the nation’s most efficient offense to a .390 hitting percentage with 20 assists on the afternoon.
Against Bard, Springfield’s offense hit .448 to cruise to the sweep with Keaton Pieper totaling 29 assists, four aces, and four blocks. Evan Acanfora finished with a team-best 10 kills, while middle hitters Mike Freytag and Jason Mascoe each registered six kills and combined for seven blocks. Jeff Gutmann also posted eight kills, and John Coen added seven kills and two aces.
Springfield will resume action on Saturday when it takes on both Elmira and Medaille.
