Springfield, Mass. — April 7, 2012 — Led by Greg Mitchell, the Coast Guard men’s tennis team defeated Springfield College, 7-2, in a New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference contest this afternoon at SC’s Julius Appleton Courts.
With the win, Coast Guard is now 7-2 overall, 2-0 in NEWMAC play. Springfield is now 5-9 overall, 1-2 in the conference.
Mitchell, a senior from Keene, N.H., defeated freshman Kyle Mersereau (Brunswick, Me.), by a score of 7-5, 6-2.
Earlier Mitchell and senior Nick Martin (State College, Pa.) led the Bears to a 2-1 doubles lead by defeating Mersereau and junior Ben Burnap (Westerly, R.I.) at No. 1 doubles, 8-5.
Coast Guard won five of six singles, winning three of three third sets. That proved to be the difference in the entire match.
