Men's Volleyball Sets Program Record For Wins After Capturing MIT Invitational

Cambridge, Mass. – April 7, 2012 – The Springfield College men’s volleyball team set the program record for most wins in a season as they defeated both Medaille and Elmira in three sets on Saturday to win the MIT Invitational. The Pride defeated Medaille 25-16, 25-13, 25-14 before handling Elmira 25-21, 25-17, 25-17.

After dropping four of their first six matches, Springfield has been on an incredible run, winning 27 of its last 28 matches, including 17 in a row. Ranked second in the country in the latest AVCA Division III National Coaches Poll, the Pride stand at 29-5 this season.

For the second-straight week, Greg Falcone was named the Most Valuable Player of the Invitational. Freshman Angel Perez joined Falcone on the All-Tournament Team.

Versus Medaille, the Pride controlled the match from both the net and the end line as it totaled 10 aces and 11.5 team blocks. Angel Perez led the way after posting 12 kills, hitting .470, to go along with six blocks, five digs, and two aces. Mike Pelletier chipped in nine kills and six digs, and middle hitters Greg Falcone and Jimmy O’Leary combined for 10 kills, 11 blocks, and four aces. Mike Becker ran the Pride’s offense to a .330 hitting percentage with 28 assists and ripped three aces.

In the Elmira victory, Becker and Keaton Pieper combined for 34 assists pacing the Pride offense. Falcone continued to have his way out of the middle, totaling 10 kills at a .620 clip and adding six blocks, while O’Leary notched 13 kills, hitting .500, with three blocks. On the pin, Perez registered eight kills hitting .470 with five digs and two blocks.

Springfield will conclude the regular season next Saturday evening in an important regional clash at MIT beginning at 7:00 pm.
