Newport, R.I. — September 1, 2012 — The Springfield College women’s tennis team defeated Salve Regina, 6-3, this afternoon in Newport. It was the season-opener for both teams. SC’s top four players each captured their singles matches.
They included Sam Carney, Jen Cleary, Siana Green, and Erin Woodbury.
Carney, a senior from Franklin, Mass., defeated Kasey Walther, 6-1, 6-1, at No, 1 singles. She was followed by Cleary, a junior from Nahant, Mass., who defeated Ana Gwozdz, 6-1, 6-2.
Green, a senior from Pomfret, Conn., won her match at No. 3 singles, defeating Elizabeth Liquori, 6-3, 6-3.
And Woodbury, a senior from Portland, Me., easily defeated Elizabeth DeFilippo, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 4.
Carney and Cleary took their match at No. 1 doubles (8-1), while Woodbury and senior Amy Buttarazzi, a senior from Scarborough, Me., won at No. 3 doubles (9-7).
Springfield is now 1-0, wile Salve is 0-1. SC’s next match is not for another two weeks when it hosts MIT on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1 pm at the newly-renovated Appleton Courts.
