Box Score

Springfield, Mass. – October 12, 2013 - The Springfield College men’s soccer team won its seventh-straight game on Saturday, 4-1 over conference rival WPI. The seven wins- in-a-row is the longest streak for the Pride since becoming a Division III team in 1995.

Springfield improves to 11-2 on the season and 3-1 in the NEWMAC. WPI falls to 9-3-1 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

Springfield had four different goal scorers, led by Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) with a goal and an assist for a three-point day.

Michael Fowler (Maynard, Mass.) got Springfield on the board in the 16th minute, putting it past the WPI goalie on the right side for an early 1-0 lead.

Less than five minutes later, Malone struck for a 2-0 Pride lead. Drew Sommer (West Chester, Pa.) passed the ball to Malone, who buried the one-touch into the back of the net for his eighth goal of the season. With 17:31 left in the first half, WPI tallied its only goal of the game, scored by Chris Ciampa (Danvers, Mass.). Eric Crevoiserat (Glastonbury, Conn.) sent a lead pass in the middle of the field to Ciampa, who tapped it in to come within one goal.

The Pride extended its lead late in the first half on a goal by Drew Vanasse (Concord, Mass.). Malone got the assist, placing a corner kick over traffic in the middle. Vanasse took control on the right post and buried it in for a 3-1 lead with 51 seconds left in the first half.

Springfield added an insurance goal in the second half. Sommer was taken down inside the box by WPI’s Kurt Naugler and Springfield was awarded a penalty kick. Junior Tyler Allen (Southbridge, Mass) took the kick and banked it into the left side of the net for a 4-1 Springfield lead that the Pride defense would hold onto.

Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) made four saves in goal for the Pride to earn the win. Jeff Wong (Millington, N.J.) made six saves in goal for WPI.

Springfield will travel to Babson next Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. start. WPI will travel to Coast Guard next Saturday for an 11:00 a.m. start.
