Springfield, Mass. – February 22, 2013 – The Springfield College men’s volleyball team cruised to a pair of three-game sweeps against Elms and Wentworth on Friday evening. Springfield bested Elms 25-9, 25-13, 25-13, before knocking off Wentworth 25-17, 25-18, 25-18 in the nightcap.
The Pride, ranked the top-team in Division III, is now 10-3.
Against Elms, Alistair Matthews led Springfield with a match-high 11 kills, hitting .500. Greg Falcone chipped in with seven kills and six blocks, while Mike Pelletier added seven kills of his own. Mike Becker recorded 28 assists and a pair of aces, leading Springfield to a .483 hitting percentage. Nick Ferry totaled a match-best eight digs in the win.
Elms was held to a negative hitting percentage, finishing the evening hitting -.059. Jeff Vautrin led the way with six kills, and Kevin Welsh handed out 18 assists.
Plenty of new faces saw action against Wentworth, however Springfield still managed to be extremely efficient on the offensive side of the ball. Eric Johnson delivered 32 assists as Springfield hit .439 for the contest. Evan Acanfora produced a team-high 12 kills, and John Coen tallied seven kills and three blocks. Jason Mascoe had a solid showing in the middle, notching five kills on six errorless attempts to go along with a match-high four blocks, and Ryan Lilley was credited with 11 digs.
Wentworth’s Ross Burdett led the way for his squad with a match-best 14 kills. Tyler Moriarty notched 25 assists to lead the Leopards as it ended the evening with a .120 hitting percentage, and Rami Akouri registered four blocks.
Springfield is back in action on Saturday when it plays in a tri-match at Daniel Webster with Southern Vermont.
