Springfield, Mass. – March 2, 2013 – Senior John Coen came off the bench to tally 12 kills, hitting .391, to go along with five blocks, five aces, and four digs against Vassar and posted a team-best eight kills against Emmanuel as the men’s volleyball team picked up a pair of wins on Saturday
Against Vassar, set scores were 27-29, 23-25, 25-19, 25-18, 15-5, while the Pride cruised past Emmanuel 25-13, 25-22, 25-14.
The top-ranked Pride improve to 15-3 on the season.
After dropping the first two sets against Vassar, each by two points, the Pride dominated the Brewers en route to its second-five set win of the wek. In support of CoenÂ's standout performance, Mike Pelletier tallied a match-best 16 kills, adding six digs and four blocks. Springfield controlled the middle, as Jimmy OÂ'Leary produced 15 kills at a .619 clip, while racking up a match-best eight blocks and fellow middle Greg Falcone registered 11 kills, three aces, and three blocks. Mike Becker dished out 52 assists and collected seven digs in leading the nationÂ's most efficient offense to a .356 hitting percentage. Nick Ferry registered a match-best 13 digs in the victory.
For the upset-minded Brewers, Matt Elgin was a great showing, posting 14 kills while hitting .600. Joe Pyne registered a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs, while John Konow delivered 43 assists and three blocks. Reno Kriz and Patrick Donohue each notched nine kills and three blocks apiece.
The Pride outhit the visitors, .356 to .201, and held a decisive 12-2 edge in service aces. Springfield also had 12.5 blocks, to VassarÂ's eight.
Springfield hit .444 in the victory over the Saints, with O’Leary and Coen each tallying eight kills. Pelletier notched six kills and four blocks, Becker handed out 26 assists, and Ferry registered eight digs.
For Emmanuel, Zach Whitermore recorded a match-best 10 kills, while Julian Hess and Wyatt Cooper each produced five kills out of the middle. Nick Updike ran the offense with 26 assists.
The Pride will host the Springfield Invitational next weekend, with Mount Ida, Baruch, and Hunter all competing starting on Friday evening.
