New London, Conn. – April 3, 2013 – The Springfield College men’s tennis team fell to host Coast Guard, 8-1, in New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) on a frigid Wednesday afternoon.
Coast Guard (3-7, 1-1 NEWMAC) lost only one singles set on the day and only as Springfield (6-5, 0-2 NEWMAC) prevailed at the No. 1 doubles spot. Ben Burnap and Kyle Merseau earned Springfield’s lone point of the match with an 8-4 win in doubles.
At No. 1 singles, Mersereau was the lone match to go three sets. He won the opening frame, 6-3, before dropping the next two sets, 6-3, 10-3. Both Cody Rodrigues and Joe Giannelli lost 6-4, 6-2, in their matches at No. 6 and No. 3, respectively.
Springfield will return home to take on Wheaton on Saturday afternoon in conference action starting at 1:00 pm.
