Boston, Mass. – September 28, 2013 - Drew Sommer (West Chester, Pa.) and Danny Amato (Newington, Conn.) had tremendous offensive showings to power the Springfield College men’s soccer team to a 6-0 win over host Emerson on Saturday.
Sommer and Amato had a hand in all six Springfield goals, as Sommer finished the day with a goal and two assists while Amato recorded two goals and one assist.
Amato assisted the game’s first goal, scored by John Mankus (Vernon, Conn.) on a free kick just 2:02 into the game. Amato tallied the next two goals for the Pride in the 11th minute and again in the 65th minute. He found a rebound and tapped it into the upper left corner to give the Pride a 2-0 lead before the half. His second gave the Pride a 3-0 lead.
Ryan Malone (Chicopee, Mass.) also had a goal and an assist in the game, giving Springfield a 4-0 lead in the 75th minute on a breakaway pass from Sommer.
Sommer assisted the Pride’s fifth goal, scored by freshman Jack Moran (Tolland, Conn.) in the 83rd minute. Moran beat the Emerson goalie and banked it into the left side. The Pride closed it out in the 88th minute of action, this time with Sommer doing the dirty work as he put a pass from Drew Vanasse (Concord, Mass.) into the left corner of the net to pull the score to its 6-0 final.
Springfield outshot Emerson, 25-8 and Billy Schmid (Wethersfield, Conn.) made three saves in goal to earn the shutout. The Pride improve to 6-2 overall and 1-1 in the NEWMAC.
Springfield will host Western New England on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
