Springfield, Mass. – September 7, 2013 – The Westfield State University womenÂ's soccer team edged Springfield College, 2-1 Saturday night in the Springfield College Invitational. The Pride gained momentum in the second half, but Westfield was able to hold on for the win.

The Owls got on the board with 22:36 left in the first half on a Springfield miscommunication in the backfield. Hannah Zannini (Amesbury, Mass.) put it in for a 1-0 Westfield lead.

The Owls scored again in the 33rd minute. Sarah Sypek (Westhampton, Mass.) raced between two defenders and broke free, launching a goal into the left side of the net for a 2-0 lead.

Springfield brought the game within one goal in the second half on a penalty kick by Nina Vital (Ludlow, Mass.) in the 63rd minute. After a collision with Westfield State goalie Jess Habif (Natick, Mass.), Vital was awarded the kick, which she buried into the left side of the net.

Springfield threatened with 35 seconds remaining in the game. Nicole Fowler (Maynard, Mass.) made a long flip throw in from the right side and Sara Dalton (Schenectady, N.Y.) tried to head it in, but Habif made the save to preserve the win.

Roger Williams 2, UW-Stout 1:

The Roger Williams womenÂ's soccer team came from behind Saturday night to beat the University of Wisconsin-Stout, 2-1 at the Springfield College Invitational.

UW-Stout got on the board 12:51 into the game on an unassisted goal from Kelsie Allen (Appleton, Wisc.). She took a shot from eight yards out and Roger Williams goalie Stephanie Jaques (Burlington, Vt.) deflected it, but it slipped into the goal for a 1-0 UW-Stout lead.

AllenÂ's shot was the only shot of the game for the Blue Devils.

Roger Williams picked it up in the second half, tying the game up on a goal from Haley Carignan (Scarborough, Maine) with 32:56 left on the clock. Teammate Kristen Tetreault (Tolland, Conn.) dribbled down the left side of the box and crossed it in the air to Carignan who buried the shot into the right side of the net.

Carignan had two points on the day, assisting the HawksÂ' second goal later in the half. With 12:35 left in the game, she tapped a pass to Hannah Noel (Adams, Mass.), who put the shot past UW-Stout goalie Robbie Shelby (La Crosse, Wisc.) for the eventual game-winner. Shelby finished the day with nine saves.
